Text

Matt. 1:22-25 Now all this is come to pass, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the lord through the prophet, saying Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son. And they shall call his name Immanuel; which is, being interpreted, God with us. And Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took unto him his wife; and knew her not till she had brought forth a son: and he called his name JESUS.

Interpretation

A prophet is one who can tell what the mind is going to bring forth by the nature and activity of its thoughts. A prophecy is the foreshadowing of events which are to take place. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Mary was a virgin. The word virgin means “pure,” “undefiled,” “unsullied,” “undisturbed,” “fresh,” “new,” “unadulterated.”

Metaphysically, the son (Immanuel) who was brought forth means the consciousness that God is with us and we are one with Him; the understanding of how the “Word became flesh” in Jesus Christ and is now being made flesh in us even as it was in Him.

Joseph represents the natural man, Jesus, progressing toward the Christ man, who willingly follows the leadings of Spirit.
