Trachonitis, trach-o-ni-t`is (Gk.)--rough; rocky; precipitous; stony; cruel.

A rocky territory that was ruled by Philip brother of Herod, at the time of the ministry of John the Baptist (Luke 3:1). It is associated with Argob of the Old Testament. Argob was a district of the kingdom of Og in Bashan (Deut. 3:4).

Meta. A very strong, hard, defensive, resistant state of thought in man, whose central ruling idea is power exercised in selfish, personal reason and will, unmodified by spiritual understanding and love (rocky, rough, stony, cruel; a district ruled by Philip, brother of Herod, of the Romans).
