Metaphysically Interpreting Ecclesiastes 1:2,17
1:2Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher; vanity of vanities, all is vanity.
1:17And I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also was a striving after wind.

What is the surest index to a person's consciousness? The things in which he finds satisfaction and contentment indicate without fail what his consciousness is.
Are humility and desire for understanding compatible with a conviction that all is vanity and "a striving after wind"? No. Humility is akin to hope, faith, devotion, and other spiritual qualities of a high order, as is the desire for understanding. The conviction that all is vanity is a sign of pessimism and disillusionment; it is marked by negation and the dominion of sense.
